Continues the Exodus translation series opened in EXO-001 (Exodus 3:1–15, burning bush). EXO-002 shifts from theophany and commissioning to confrontation and contest: the first sign performed before Pharaoh and the counter-sign performed by the Egyptian magicians.
Purpose
Exodus 7:8–12 is the staff-and-serpent contest: Aaron's rod transforms into a serpent before Pharaoh; the Egyptian sorcerers replicate the miracle by their secret arts; Aaron's serpent devours the others. This passage puts maximum structural pressure on Tonesu in six areas:

The Central Structural Problem: "X Became Y"
The most important finding from this batch is negative: Tonesu has no single-clause 'become' verb.
For "the staff became a snake," Tonesu requires a three-clause decomposition:
zo-su-mu ki— the staff underwent change/motion (the change event);— sequential connector (constant conjunction, no causal mechanism asserted)ne zo-ki-ma— [it is] a snake (the resulting state predication)
The ki (primitive: motion/change) serves as the intransitive change event. The resulting state ne zo-ki-ma is a bare copula + predicate in the following clause. The three-clause form is the canonical Tonesu expression for categorical transformation until a dedicated 'become' compound is registered (if ever).
Why not a single compound? The options considered:
- ne-ki zo-ki-ma — "enter-bonded-state snake": grammatically awkward; ne-ki takes its target state built in (like zo-se-ki = W060 = enter trance, where the state is part of the compound). A general-purpose "become X" needs a separate result clause.
- zo-su-mu-ne-ki — compound: "staff-state-change": merges the object and the change but loses the resulting state.
- zo-su-mu ki ne zo-ki-ma — all in one clause: possible but the ki (intransitive change) and then ne (copula) without a ; connector would be ambiguous about scope.
The ; chain is the correct form. It is elegant in its precision: it tells you the three things that happened (cast, changed, became) without asserting a mechanism for any of them.
The to-ra-li Cross-Genre Test
W207 to-ra-li was registered for DND-004 (D&D classes, June 2025 ca.) as "wizard / mage — the class whose power comes from knowledge-as-force." The compound: to (thought/pattern) + ra (force/energy) + li (social agent) = knowledge-force-agent.
EXO-002 deploys to-ra-li for the Egyptian court magicians (hartummim and mekashshefim in Hebrew). The semantic test: are Egyptian court sorcerers and D&D wizards instances of the same category? In Tonesu, yes. Both are agents whose primary capability is the application of force through knowledge-based means, not through physical training (ra-ka-li, fighter) or devotional authority (vo-ra-li, cleric). The Egyptian magicians ARE to-ra-li. This is a meaningful semantic claim: the compound is not culture-specific. Any discipline that uses systematic knowledge to effect real-world change is to-ra-li territory.
Similarly, wi-ra-su (W179: systematic practice of directed force = magic) was registered in DND context. EXO-002 attests it for "the secret arts" (lahateihem) of the Egyptian magicians. The mapping is direct: systematic magical practice as a body of knowledge and technique = wi-ra-su regardless of cultural frame.

- The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9. "When Pharaoh says to you, 'Prove yourselves by working a miracle,' then you shall say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.'" 10. So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. 11. Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers, and they, the magicians of Egypt, also did the same by their secret arts. 12. For each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.

S696 — Aaron's transformation miracle (Exodus 7:10)

Notes: This sentence is structurally the most important in the batch: it establishes the canonical Tonesu pattern for categorical transformation. Three clauses via ;:
1. la-na-Aharon ka lo-zo-su-mu — Aaron performed a deliberate action on the staff (cast it)
2. zo-su-mu ki — the staff underwent a change event
3. ne zo-ki-ma — [it is/was] a snake
The agent of transformation is theologically implicit — the divine source (be-go-li) commanded this but the sentence records the observable event. ki (change/motion) as an intransitive event verb is the pivot: the staff changed, full stop. The mechanism is left open.

S697 — Pharaoh summons the sorcerers (Exodus 7:11a)

Notes: na-Faro = Pharaoh (from Hebrew Par'oh; first corpus attestation). si-ki = directed-signal = a signal aimed at a specific recipient = summons/call. to-ra-li (W207) = knowledge-force-agent = sorcerer/wizard. Second-register attestation of W207 (first was DND-004, D&D wizard class).
The verse mentions "the wise men and the sorcerers and the Egyptian magicians" — three NPs in Hebrew. Tonesu collapses this into the single categorical term to-ra-li (the class makes the distinction unnecessary at this level of analysis). If individual rank within the Egyptian court is relevant, further discrimination could be made, but for corpus testing purposes the category is sufficient.
S698 — The sorcerers' counter-action (Exodus 7:11b)

Notes: zo-su-mu-ne = staff-bond = their staffs; ne (bond/connection) as possessive marker appended to the compound. go-si = signal-means = instrumental "by means of" (established SOL-001). wi-ra-su (W179) = systematic-directed-force-practice = magic/secret arts. The exact action (casting down) is not elaborated — ka lo-X = performed a deliberate action on X, where the action content is understood from the prior clause context (discourse reference to S696).
Second-register attestation of wi-ra-su: the Hebrew lahateihem (their enchantments / by their secret arts) maps precisely to go-si wi-ra-su. The go-si instrumental particle correctly encodes the means, not the cause.
S699 — Parallel transformation (Exodus 7:12a)
Written: zosumune ki; ne zokima
Reading: Their staffs changed; [they were] snakes.
Notes: Subject-initial, agentless form of the transformation pattern. Structurally: clauses 2 and 3 of S696's three-clause chain, applied to the sorcerers' staffs. The exact parallel with S696 (same ; chain form, same resulting predicate ne zo-ki-ma) is the structural point: the Egyptian magic produced the same categorical event as Aaron's divine sign. The competition is structurally encoded: two identical transformation patterns, side by side. The decisive break comes in S700.
No possessive on the resulting zo-ki-ma because the transformation makes ownership ambiguous (whose snakes are they now?). The sentence records the fact: the staffs transformed.
S700 — Aaron's serpent swallows (Exodus 7:12b)

Notes: zo-ki-ma-na-Aharon = Aaron's-serpent (possessive chain: kind-term + na- + name). ko-de = containment-decrease = engulf-and-consume = swallow/devour (first attestation; compositional, 2-root, below CLQ threshold). lo-zo-su-mu-ne = patient: their staffs.
Cross-type reference: the agent is zo-ki-ma-na-Aharon (the serpent) but the patient is zo-su-mu-ne (their staffs). This mirrors the Hebrew source text: Exodus 7:12b says "Aaron's staff/rod swallowed up their staffs" — reverting to the word "staff" even though they had been transformed into snakes. The reversion may reflect: (a) the sorcerers' serpents transforming back as they were consumed, (b) metonymic reference to the original form, or (c) an editorial choice to contrast the sacred rod vs the counterfeit. Tonesu follows the source in using zo-su-mu-ne as patient. The grammaticality is unaffected: ko-de takes a named patient regardless of its prior categorical history.
S701 — Pharaoh's heart hardened (Exodus 7:13)

Notes: Bi-clausal parallel (/) pairing Pharaoh's internal volitional state with his external non-reception. The / particle pairs the clauses structurally as mirrored aspects of a single condition.
wi-fe-ki = will-boundary-inchoative = first attestation; compositional analysis:
- wi (will/intention) — the seat of volition
- fe (boundary/limit) — a limit or closed edge
- -ki (inchoative suffix) — the entering of a state
= the will entered a bounded, closed state = the will hardened itself into a boundary
This is the Tonesu rendering of Hebrew yehezak lev-Faro (Pharaoh's heart became strong/hard). The volitional form la-na-Faro wi-fe-ki has Pharaoh as the subject of his own hardening — the volitional interpretation (free will reading). The divine-hardening interpretation (where YHWH is the agent of hardening, as stated in Exodus 7:3) would be: la-be-go-li ka wi-fe-ki lo-na-Faro — but the corpus sentence uses the agentless inchoative to match the grammatically ambiguous Hebrew of verse 13 specifically (which lacks an explicit agent; verse 3 is explicit).
si-be-go-li = signal from the creator-agent = the divine sign. no la-na-Faro si lo-si-be-go-li = Not: Pharaoh perceived/received the divine signal. The / structure means the two clauses are structural partners: the hardening is the volitional condition; the non-reception is its manifestation.
Theological crux documented: EXO-002 touches the divine hardening / free will problem but does not resolve it. The Tonesu sentence is deliberately agentless in the hardening clause, holding the ambiguity of the source text.
