Translation Test: Isaiah 53:4–6

Purpose

Isaiah 53:4–6 is the theological and structural core of the Suffering Servant poem. Three verses; nine clauses. The passage introduces two structures that have no prior Tonesu attestation:

  1. Substitutionary causal logic — the cause of the Servant's suffering (our transgressions) is morally attributable to one party (o-li, us) while the physical effect falls on a different party (lo-zo-li, the Servant). Tonesu's go {cause} frame handles efficient causation — "because X, Y" — but has not been tested where the moral agent of the cause and the recipient of the effect are structurally disjoint.

  2. Third-person possessive (gap) — Tonesu has first-person (-mi) and second-person (-tu) possessive suffixes. "His wounds" requires a third-person possessive construction. Workaround: [noun] lo-[person-NP] as genitive framing using the lo- role-particle. Novel; flagged as an open question.

Secondary findings: go-si extended to manner/comparison function; the appearance predication pattern (MAP-001) applied to theological misreading; wi-fe family behaviour in moral-debt contexts.

4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — every one — to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Juncture note on wi-fe'de vs de-wi-fe: These are structurally distinct: - wi-fe'de (W203): [wi-fe]'de — juncture pre-binds wi-fe (rule, W100) as a unit; de = head; result = decrease whose ground is a rule = the punishment itself (penalty imposed on a subject by a rule). - de-wi-fe: no juncture; right-branches freely as de-(wi-fe) = decrease of [willed-boundary] = erosion of the normative framework = moral debt/guilt (the objective state of having violated norms, prior to any punishment).

ISA-001 S754 uses ka-wi-fe-de (deliberate transgression, act) and de-wi-fe (iniquity, state of moral debt). ISA-001 S755 uses wi-fe'de (W203, the penalty/punishment).


ISA-001 — The Substitutionary Core (S752–S758)

S752 — ISA-001-A

Tonesu: la-zo-li ka-ko [fa-de lo-o-li] / la-zo-li ka-ko [fa-ra lo-o-li]

Written: lazoli kako fade looli / lazoli kako fara looli

Natural reading: He bore our grief / he carried our overwhelming anguish.

Notes: Hebrew poetry parallelism encoded as bi-clausal /. Left clause: fa-de (affect-decrease = grief/sorrow, compositional first use) as the patient of containment ka-ko. Right clause: fa-ra (W154, overwhelming affect = fear/physical suffering — the root covers both dread and somatic pain) as the amplified parallel. Agent la-zo-li (the living person = the Servant) repeated in both halves per the anaphoric convention established in SNG-002 S741. The / marks this as a formal parallelism (two phrasings of the same act, second intensifying the first) rather than mere sequence. fa-de and fa-ra target the emotional and physical dimensions of anguish respectively; together they cover the Hebrew חֳלִי (holiness = illness/pain) and מַכְאֹב (makob = suffering/pain). The key semantic claim: substitutionary possession — he took on what belongs to us. The lo-o-li genitive (lo- marking possession toward the collective us) establishes the moral ownership before v.5 makes the transfer explicit.


S753 — ISA-001-B

Tonesu: la-o-mi si [lo-zo-li ka-ra-de go {la-Elohim}]

Written: laomi si lozoli karade go {laElohim}

Natural reading: We perceived [as the surface signal] that the person was struck by God's action.

Notes: MAP-001 appearance predication la-X si [Q] = "X perceives/signals [Q] as the outward appearance." si = outward signal/appearance (P005); used here to mark the people's misreading. They saw the Servant's suffering and parsed it through the lens of divine punishment (Deuteronomic theodicy: suffering → God is punishing you). The bracketed clause [lo-zo-li ka-ra-de go {la-Elohim}] = "the person was struck, with God as the causal agent." ra-de = force-decrease = being struck/wounded (compositional, first use). Intentional passive: lo-zo-li ka-ra-de = the person was (intentionally) struck — no explicit la- agent, but go {la-Elohim} attributes God as the cause. Structural note: this extends the PAV-001 intentional passive (lo-P ka-Q ti-de) with explicit third-party causal attribution (go {agent}). The appearance predication wrapper si signals that this reading is wrong — it is what the crowd's surface-signal processing produced, not the deep causal reality described in S754.


S754 — ISA-001-C

Tonesu: lo-zo-li ka-ra-de go {ka-wi-fe-de o-li} ; lo-zo-li ka-ra-no-ki go {de-wi-fe o-li}

Natural reading: The person was struck because of our deliberate transgressions; the person was crushed because of our moral debt.

Notes: First Tonesu attestation of substitutionary causal logic. Two ;-connected intentional passives, each with a go {cause} attribution. The causal source in both cases is morally attributable to o-li (us, the collective), but the physical effect (ka-ra-de, ka-ra-no-ki) falls on lo-zo-li (the Servant). This is causal transfer: the normal go {X} Y frame has X as either a physical condition or a party whose action produces Y. Here X is our guilt/transgression, the party bearing X is us, but Y falls on someone else. Tonesu's go frame handles this cleanly because it marks logical/moral cause without requiring agent identity between cause-holder and effect-recipient. The disjunction is structurally visible.

  • ka-wi-fe-de = deliberate rule-decrease = transgression as an act: ka-(wi-(fe-de)) = intentional [will toward [boundary-decrease]] = deliberate norm violation. First use.
  • de-wi-fe = moral debt/guilt as a state: de-(wi-fe) = decrease of [willed-boundary] = structural erosion of normativity = iniquity. Distinct from wi-fe'de (W203 = the penalty imposed). First use.
  • ka-ra-no-ki = intentional-force-immobilization = crushing: ka-(ra-(no-ki)) = deliberate [force [immobility]] = causing the force-stopped state. Distinct from ka-ra-de (being struck with force-decrease). First use.

Contrast with S753: S753 = what the crowd perceived (si), encoded as a specific causal claim with go {la-Elohim}. S754 = the underlying structural truth. Both use go attribution, but S753's si wrapper marks it as misperception. The reader holds both simultaneously.


S755 — ISA-001-D

Source: "upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace." (v.5c)

Tonesu: la-zo-li ko lo-wi-fe'de [go {ne-no-ra lu-o-li}]

Written: lazoli ko lowife'de go {nenora luooli}

Natural reading: The person received the penalty that caused peace toward us.

Notes: ko = containment/reception predicate (S068–S071: passive reception, no intentionality required). lo-wi-fe'de = the penalty (W203, wi-fe'de = rule-imposed cost = punishment imposed by a normative framework). The relative clause [go {ne-no-ra lu-o-li}] = "that caused peace for us": go {ne-no-ra} = resulting in relation-without-force; lu-o-li = toward us (beneficiary marking with lu-). ne-no-ra (W171) = relation-without-force = peace/shalom (already registered: ne = relation, no = negation, ra = force; first attested S588). The construction establishes a three-link causal chain across S754–S755–S756: our transgressions → the Servant's punishment → our peace → our healing. The chain is held together by go at each link; no new connective particle is needed.


S756 — ISA-001-E

Tonesu: la-o-li zo-vo-ki go {ra-de lo-zo-li}

Written: laoli zovoki go {rade lozoli}

Natural reading: We entered living-health because of the person's wounds.

Notes: zo-vo-ki = living-worth-entry = entering health = being healed (compositional: zo = living, vo = worth/health-property, ki = entry; right-branching: zo-(vo-ki) = living [worth-entry]; first use). go {ra-de lo-zo-li} = because of [wounds of the person]. Third-person possessive workaround first attestation. Tonesu has -mi (first person possessive) and -tu (second person possessive) as established corpus forms (e.g. de-zo-mi = my death, SNG-002 S739; wi-du-mi = my victory). There is no established -X suffix for third-person possession. Workaround: ra-de lo-zo-li = wounds [toward/of the person] — treating lo- as a genitive marker inside a causal go {} scope. Inside go {}, lo-zo-li clearly modifies ra-de (it cannot be parsed as a patient marker in this position). The construction is novel; it relies on the scoping of go {} to resolve the potential ambiguity. Flagged as an open question: should third-person possession have a dedicated suffix form?


S757 — ISA-001-F

Source: "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — every one — to his own way." (v.6a–b)

Tonesu: a-o-li ka-ki-no go-si zo-pa-li ; a-o-li ka-ki go-si to-lo-o-li

Written: aooli kakino gosi zopali ; aooli kaki gosi tolooli

Natural reading: All of us wandered aimlessly in the manner of animals; all of us moved, each by our own understanding.

Notes: - ka-ki-no = deliberate-motion-absence = aimless motion/wandering/going astray (compositional: ka = intentional action, ki = motion, no = absence; first use). - go-si used in manner function: go-si [description] = "in the manner of / after the fashion of." go-si (instrument/means marker) has been attested in AOW-001 and SOL-001 in instrumental contexts. This batch extends it to comparison/manner: how one acts, not just what one uses. First attestation of go-si in manner-of function. - zo-pa-li = living-place-being = creature defined by living-in-space = grazing animal/sheep (compositional: zo = living, pa = space/place, li = person; zo-(pa-li) = living [place-being] = creature of a place; first use in comparison context). - Simile via go-si: the construction go-si zo-pa-li = in-the-manner-of creatures avoids extending ~ to analogy/comparison. ~ spec = "approximately / on the order of" (epistemic or structural approximation). A simile is an analogy of kind, not a quantitative approximation — using ~ here would be a register mis-application. go-si as manner/analogy is the correct mechanism. - Second clause: a-o-li ka-ki go-si to-lo-o-li = all of us moved in-the-manner-of / toward our-own-collective-understanding. to-lo-o-li = to (knowing/conceptual root) + lo-o-li (genitive of us) = the conceptual-framework belonging to us = our own way of thinking/going (our own way). Distributive quantification gap: The Hebrew "every one to his own way" is distributive — each individual to their own separate direction. a-o-li ka-ki go-si to-lo-o-li uses collective a-o-li (all of us universally), collapsing the distributive reading. Tonesu has no established distributive quantifier. The sentence correctly says "all of us went according to our own [collective] way" but loses the sense of each person diverging individually. Flagged as an open question; the distributive-vs-collective quantification distinction is a gap in the language.


S758 — ISA-001-G

Tonesu: la-Yahweh ka-ne-ki lo-zo-li lo-de-wi-fe a-o-li

Natural reading: YHWH caused to converge on the person the moral debt of all of us.

Notes: ka-ne-ki = deliberate-connection-entry = intentionally causing a convergence/meeting = to place upon, to lay on (compositional: ka = intentional action, ne = connection/relation, ki = entry into state; right-branching: ka-(ne-ki) = intentional [connection-entry]; extends ne-ki = "to connect," first attested S013; first use of ka-ne-ki). The divine name Yahweh used directly in la- agent position, following the Elohim convention established across the theological corpus. lo-zo-li = toward/on the person (patient of the placement). lo-de-wi-fe = the moral debt (patient of the convergence action): lo- + de-wi-fe (decrease-of-willed-boundary = moral debt). a-o-li = all of us = genitive modifier on de-wi-fe: the collective's iniquity. Structural summation: this sentence makes the divine agency in the substitutionary causal chain explicit. S754 established that our transgressions/guilt are the logical go-cause of the Servant's wounds. S758 reveals that YHWH is the active agent who caused the convergence of that guilt onto the Servant — adding a second causal layer: go {o-li ka-wi-fe-de} [Servant wounded] AND la-Yahweh ka-ne-ki [Servant] [guilt of all]. Two causal claims, different frames, compatible.

Structural Findings

1. Substitutionary causal logic — go {cause-from-A} effect-on-B

The core theological claim of vv.4–5 is: the cause of the Servant's wounds is morally attributable to us (o-li), but the physical effect falls on the Servant (lo-zo-li). Tonesu's go {X} frame marks X as the condition/source that yields the following result. It does not require that the party responsible for X is the same party who receives the effect. The disjunction is structurally visible:

The guilt belongs to o-li. The wound falls on zo-li. No new particle needed. Tonesu's go frame handles causal transfer cleanly.

2. Third-person possessive gap

Tonesu has -mi (first: de-zo-mi = my death) and -tu (second) as established possessive suffixes. There is no suffix for third-person possession. "His wounds" (ra-de lo-zo-li) uses the lo- role-particle as a genitive marker inside a go {} scope — the bracketed context prevents misparse as a patient marker. This is a workaround, not a permanent solution. Open question logged.

3. go-si in manner/comparison function

go-si (instrument/means particle) extended to manner-of-action comparison: go-si zo-pa-li = in-the-manner-of animals. The ~ approximation mark is not appropriate for simile (it indicates quantitative/structural approximation, not analogy of kind). go-si as the comparison vehicle avoids invented particles and is semantically coherent: "using this as the mode" → "doing it the way this thing does it."

4. Distributive quantification gap

"Every one to his own way" is distributive: each of N parties goes to a distinct direction that belongs individually to that party. Tonesu a-o-li (all-us-collectively) is a universal quantifier over a collective — it correctly says "all of us going-by-[one-shared-framework]." It does not say "each going to their own separate framework." The distributive-vs-collective distinction is unaddressed in the grammar. Second open question logged (the first being third-person possessives).

5. ne-kika-ne-ki causative derivation

ne-ki (enter-connection = to connect, first attested S013) combined with ka- prefix = ka-ne-ki = deliberate causing of a connection = to place upon, cause to converge. This is the first ka- + inchoative compound (ka-[root-ki] = intentionally bring about the state entry). It extends the productive pattern: if ne-ki = enter connection, then ka-ne-ki = cause to enter connection = place/lay upon.
