Purpose
The Sermon on the Mount is the longest sustained ethical discourse in the Synoptic tradition. It tests Tonesu across:
- Beatitude formula (8 + 1 instances): state-predication blessing proclamation
- Antithesis form (6 instances): contrast of old teaching vs new teaching
- Interior-state language: mourning, meekness, desire, purity of heart, anger, lust
- Commands and prohibitions: imperatives, negated inchoatives, purpose frames
- Ethical abstractions: righteousness, forgiveness, mercy, judgment, hypocrisy
- Prayer template (Lord's Prayer, 6:9–13): first corpus test of prayer-as-structured-language
- Metaphor (salt, light, lamp, tree/fruit, two foundations): figurative predication
- Conditional structures: "if X, then Y"; "whoever does X"; "when you do X"
This is a Tier 4 stress test. The primary lexical challenge is the domain of affect + ethics — Tonesu handles these via fa (affective substrate) compounds and vo-ne (value-in-relation) compositions. Grammar handles nearly all structural forms.

Overall: Matthew 5–7 is ~90% compositionally expressible in Tonesu. The core ethical content of the Sermon translates more cleanly than Genesis 1, because Tonesu's primitive set was explicitly designed to handle affect, intention, and relational value. The primary remaining gaps are cultural-theological specifics (hell, Gehenna) and a few structural absences in the grammar (the "as X, so Y" parallel frame).
Open Questions
SOM-001: a (affirmation particle, V-form) deployed at 5:37 for "yes." Currently unassigned in the V-form reserved set. Formal assignment recommended; this is the highest-frequency discourse use for the a slot. Resolution pending.
SOM-002: pa-de-no-fe (place of boundless decay) proposed for Gehenna/hell. The theological concept of a place of permanent punishment has no primitive equivalent. The compositional form is honest about what it says. Needs corpus testing before registration.
SOM-003: "As in heaven, so on earth" (6:10) — the parallel-frame gap. Tonesu has go...du (cause–result), to-go... (conditional), and go-[X] (analogical origin), but no dedicated "as/just as X, likewise Y" bilateral-parallel. The go-pa-be approximation works for this specific verse.
