Translation Test: Dungeons & Dragons — Forty Spells
Source: Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition spell list, sampled across iconic combat effects and civic/worldbuilding utility
Status: Draft — second pass
Purpose
The school names in DND-001 and the recategorization in DND-005 were still taxonomic arguments. A spell list is harder to fake. Once named spells are on the table, the taxonomy has to survive contact with actual effects: barriers, counter-magic, teleportation, force blasts, detection, illusion, charm, corpse-speech, animation, flight, bodily transformation, communication, shelter, translation, agriculture, restoration, and governance.
This batch therefore asks a more practical question than the earlier D&D magic files:
Can Tonesu describe a healthy spell list by reusing a small set of operator families, or does it collapse back into ad hoc fantasy naming as soon as the spell effects get specific?
Primary tests:
- spell-level reuse of the DND-005 operator families rather than a flat school list
- named spell analysis without inventing a separate lexicon for every iconic spell
- manifestation split: spatial emergence (
pa-be-ki) vs force emergence (ra-be-ki) - perception split: knowledge-reaching (
to-se-ki) vs appearance-crafting (ge-se-ki) - alteration split: general property-change (
ge-ki) vs death-domain alteration (de-zo-ki) - whether the same operator families continue to organize infrastructure-facing magic rather than only encounter-facing magic
Secondary tests:
- whether Counterspell and Dispel Magic stay inside the boundary family instead of drifting into a generic "anti-magic" bucket
- whether Charm Person and Suggestion clearly target affect/will rather than knowledge or appearance
- whether Speak with Dead and Animate Dead reinforce the claim that necromancy is a specialized branch of alteration, not a distinct magical operator
- whether spells that reshape institutions, such as Sending, Plant Growth, Geas, and Raise Dead, still sort cleanly without demanding new school labels

Selection Logic
The list is intentionally not random. It samples the operator families established in the earlier D&D work.
The first pass, DND-006, focused on iconic play-facing spells. The second pass, DND-007, shifts toward the spells that would most visibly change cities, churches, farms, courts, armies, trade, and travel if a setting took them seriously.
DND-006 — iconic spell pressure
| Operator family | Spells sampled |
|---|---|
| Boundary arts | Shield, Mage Armor, Counterspell, Dispel Magic |
| Manifestation arts | Find Familiar, Misty Step, Dimension Door, Fireball, Lightning Bolt |
| Perception arts | Detect Magic, Identify, Detect Thoughts, Invisibility, Mirror Image |
| Affect / will arts | Charm Person, Suggestion |
| Alteration arts | Speak with Dead, Animate Dead, Fly, Polymorph |
DND-007 — worldbuilding spell pressure
| Operator family | Spells sampled |
|---|---|
| Boundary arts | Alarm, Arcane Lock, Tiny Hut, Private Sanctum |
| Manifestation arts | Create Food and Water, Sending, Teleportation Circle, Continual Flame |
| Perception arts | Comprehend Languages, Locate Object, Speak with Animals, Speak with Plants |
| Affect / will arts | Calm Emotions, Heroism, Command, Geas |
| Alteration arts | Plant Growth, Water Breathing, Revivify, Raise Dead |
That distribution is the point. The expanded file is testing whether the five-family redesign is productive enough to organize both encounter-facing spells and institution-facing spells.

What The Expanded Spell List Exposes
1. The DND-005 repair was real
The spell list validates the operator-family redesign better than the school names did.
- Shield, Mage Armor, Counterspell, and Dispel Magic all read naturally as boundary-management acts.
- Find Familiar, Misty Step, and Dimension Door sit cleanly beside Fireball and Lightning Bolt only once manifestation is split into spatial and force domains.
- Detect Magic and Invisibility are near each other in ordinary fantasy conversation, but Tonesu keeps them apart because one extends perception and the other rewrites appearance.
That is exactly what a good taxonomy should do.
2. Counterspell is a better test than Fireball
Fireball is easy. Everyone already knows it is a force spell.
Counterspell is the better test because it pressures whether the system can treat "blocking emergence" as a real family operation. Tonesu passes that test. ko-fe-ki is not just warding against blows; it also governs the limit at which another magical event is allowed to take form.
3. Detect, deceive, and influence remain distinct
This is where Tonesu is strongest.
- Detect Magic and Detect Thoughts are
to-se-ki: knowledge through extended perception. - Invisibility and Mirror Image are
ge-se-ki: crafted appearance. - Charm Person and Suggestion are
wi-fa-ki: operations on affect and will.
English fantasy talk often lets those run together under "mind magic" or "trickery." Tonesu does not have to.
4. Necromancy still refuses to become its own operator
Speak with Dead and Animate Dead confirm the earlier claim from DND-001 and DND-005. Necromancy is still alteration at the death-boundary.
The two spells differ by restored function:
- S992 restores speech
- S993 restores motion
But both remain de-zo-ki operations rather than evidence for a wholly distinct school logic.
5. Spell names can stay names
The batch does not try to replace every D&D spell title with a new Tonesu lexical item. That would be the wrong pressure. The names can remain proper-name anchors while the analysis shows what the spell is structurally doing.
That is the cleaner result:
- keep the title as a title
- explain the effect through the operator families
6. The second pass matters more for worldbuilding than for combat balance
DND-007 is the stronger world-building stress test.
- Alarm and Arcane Lock change policing, storage, and property.
- Sending and Teleportation Circle change administration, diplomacy, trade, and empire.
- Create Food and Water and Plant Growth change famine, logistics, taxation, and pilgrimage.
- Comprehend Languages changes law, scripture, scholarship, and border exchange.
- Revivify and Raise Dead change medicine, ritual, inheritance, martyrdom, and political legitimacy.
That is where the operator-family redesign starts paying off outside taxonomy talk.
7. Boundary arts are not just defense spells
DND fantasy often treats abjuration as a combat school. The expanded sample makes that view too narrow.
- Alarm is surveillance
- Arcane Lock is property control
- Tiny Hut is temporary architecture
- Private Sanctum is privacy and secrecy
The family is about managing access-limits, not merely blocking attacks.
8. Affect / will arts become politically dangerous very quickly
Charm Person and Suggestion already hinted at this in DND-006. DND-007 makes it unavoidable.
Calm Emotions, Heroism, Command, and Geas are not niche adventurer tricks. They are spells that bear directly on crowds, loyalty, fear, obedience, public ritual, punishment, and rule.
That supports the Tonesu decision to keep affect and will as a distinct operator family instead of burying them under illusion, enchantment, or generic mind magic.
9. Death-domain alteration still scales without needing a new school
The expanded list now samples death-threshold magic in four directions:
- Speak with Dead restores speech
- Animate Dead restores motion
- Revivify restores vitality
- Raise Dead restores the living person more fully
That is strong evidence that de-zo-ki is a real productive branch. It covers a coherent domain without forcing necromancy to become a separate top-level magical operator.
Verdict
The forty-spell list holds up better than the twenty-spell list did.
Tonesu does not need a giant fantasy spell dictionary to make D&D magic intelligible. It needs a small number of reusable operator families and enough compositional discipline to keep force, space, perception, appearance, affect, will, death, and property-change from collapsing into each other.
The second pass strengthens that result because it moves from encounter effects to civilization effects. The schools proved the taxonomy could be named. The first spell pass proved the taxonomy could survive iconic spells. The second spell pass proves it can also describe the kinds of magic that would actually reorganize ordinary life.

Verdict: irreducibly formal — the expanded spell list works by preserving distinctions among boundary, manifestation, perception, appearance, affect, and alteration. Colloquial compression would erase the main point of the batches.
