Translation Test: Sanguinius at the Eternity Gate
Source: Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Echoes of Eternity (2022)
Series: The Siege of Terra, Book 6 (Warhammer 40,000)
Status: Complete — two batches (SNG-001, SNG-002)
Purpose
The speech Sanguinius delivers to the defenders of the Eternity Gate is among the most carefully crafted pieces of oratory in the Horus Heresy / Siege of Terra novel series. It is distinguished by structural paradoxes that stress-test Tonesu's vocabulary and grammar:
- The opening admission of unwillingness — a commander who admits he does not want to be there. Tests: first-person affective attribution in an adversarial context; the
wi-no(unwillingness) compound. - Asymmetric truth-telling — "I will not lie to you." Tests:
ka-si-no(deliberate false-signal = to lie); vocative with relative modifier on the address-target;fa-ra(fear/dread) in a temporal noun phrase. - The permission to flee — Sanguinius gives his soldiers explicit permission to run, without shame. Tests: permission vs. capability distinction; the antithetical
/parallel for "not X / but Y" in an ethics context;de-vo(shame = loss of worth, W231, first use). - The identity split — "I am half-human. The human in me demands I stay." Tests: component-of-a-person as a syntactic agent (
la-pe-zo-li-mi);wi-ra(directed power) as internal compulsion. - The tricolon vow — "I will stand. I will fight. I will hold this wall." Tests: three-clause
wi-intent tricolon with anaphoric repetition; first use ofka-su-pa(deliberate stance = to stand firm) andka-ra(deliberate force-action = to fight). - The moral rationale — "Not because I can win, but because it is right." Tests: causal-negation +
ke,pivot structure. - The polar interrogative address — "Will you run?" Tests: fronted
to-siin communal oratory address. - The collective defiant response — "No!" Tests: first single-word corpus sentence; first multi-speaker utterance;
no!as exclamatory primitive.
No translation has yet been attempted for this speech register — military oratory directed at a group by a figure of transcendent authority. This batch establishes the register.

SNG-001 — The Admission (S732–S737)
S732 — SNG-001-A
Source: "I do not want to be here."
Tonesu: la-mi wi-no lo-fe-su
Written: lami wino lofesu
Natural reading: I do not want to be here [at this wall].
Notes: W230 wi-no first use. The speech's opening: a commander admits reluctance. wi-no (unwillingness) as predicate; lo-fe-su = at/toward the fortification. Structurally and psychologically unusual — oratory rarely begins here.
S733 — SNG-001-B
Source: "We cannot hold this wall. They are too many; we are too few."
Tonesu: la-o-li no be-vo [ka-ko lo-fe-su] ; lo-ze nu-be lo-mi
Written: laoli no bevo kako lofesu ; loze nube lomi
Natural reading: We cannot hold this wall; they outnumber us.
Notes: First-person-plural capability negation. la-o-li = collective-us; no be-vo = lack-capability; [ka-ko lo-fe-su] = to hold the fortification. ; = sequential connector. Second clause: numeric comparison using nu-be (comparison particle, S064–S067).
S734 — SNG-001-C
Source: "I will not lie. Not to you who have come through two hundred days of this."
Tonesu: la-mi no [ka-si-no] — he [ta {re-ti-be fa-ra} ki-de ti-de] o-tu
Written: lami no kasino — he ta {retibefara} kide tide otu
Natural reading: I will not lie — O you who have walked through days of dread.
Notes: Truth-pledge + vocative-relative address. ka-si-no = deliberate false-signaling = to lie (compositional: ka + si + no). he (G029) = vocative. Relative clause: [ta {re-ti-be fa-ra} ki-de ti-de] o-tu = "you who traversed days of fear." fa-ra (W154) = fear/awe in the temporal modifier phrase re-ti-be fa-ra (days of dread).
S735 — SNG-001-D
Source: "If you wish to run, run."
Tonesu: he [wi ka-ki-de] o-tu — ka-ki-de
Written: he [wi kakide] otu — kakide
Natural reading: You who wish to flee — flee!
Notes: Vocative-relative + permissive imperative. ka-ki-de first use (deliberate motion-away = to flee). The speech's radical center: explicit permission to abandon the post. Grammatical form: he [relative] NP — imperative.
S736 — SNG-001-E
Source: "Not in shame, but with honour."
Tonesu: no de-vo / wi-vo
Written: no devo / wivo
Natural reading: Not in shame / but with honour.
Notes: W231 de-vo first use. Antithetical / (G013 vel) in an ethical context. de-vo (shame = worth-decrease) / wi-vo (W190 honour-disposition = will toward worth). Four words; the entire moral qualification of the permission.
S737 — SNG-001-F
Source: "Go with my gratitude. You have already given everything."
Tonesu: ka-ki-de ; la-mi fa-vo lo-o-tu ; la-o-tu ne-mi lo-o-su de ti-de
Written: kakide ; lami favo lootu ; laotu nemi loosu de tide
Natural reading: Go — I am grateful for you; you have already given me everything.
Notes: Three-clause dignified release. fa-vo (W197) = positive affect directed at the departing soldiers = gratitude without a new vocabulary entry. la-o-tu ne-mi lo-o-su de ti-de = "you-all released-to-me everything past": transfer construction with ne-mi recipient marker + o-su (all-structure = everything) + de (release) + ti-de (past).

SNG-002 — The Choice (S738–S744)
S738 — SNG-002-A
Source: "I am half-human. And the human in me demands that I stay."
Tonesu: la-pe-mi ne zo-li ; la-pe-zo-li-mi wi-ra [la-mi no-ki]
Written: lapemi ne zoli ; lapezolimi wira [lami noki]
Natural reading: I am (in part) human; the human in me demands that I stay.
Notes: Identity split + compelled volition. la-pe-mi = my-component (as agent). Second clause: la-pe-zo-li-mi = my person-component as agent; wi-ra (W177) = directed power/authority = demands/commands; [la-mi no-ki] = that I not-move = that I stay. First attestation of a component-of-a-person as a syntactic agent.
S739 — SNG-002-B
Source: "I know not the When or the How, only that it comes."
Tonesu: la-mi no-to [ti lo-de-zo-mi] ; no-to [su lo-de-zo-mi] — ru-fe, [lo-de-zo-mi be ti-be]
Written: lami noto [ti lodeozomi] ; noto [su lodeozomi] — ru-fe, [lodeozomi be tibe]
Natural reading: I know not the When or the How — only that my death is near.
Notes: Double no-to + exclusive scope reversal. Two paralleled epistemic negations (no-to on time and on manner/structure), then — + ru-fe, = "only." de-zo-mi (my death) as the shared referent. be ti-be = grows near / approaches (W040 proximate future).
S740 — SNG-002-C
Source: "I choose this death. I choose to die here."
Tonesu: la-mi wi lo-de-zo-mi / la-mi wi [la-mi de-zo lo-pa-mi]
Written: lami wi lodeozomi / lami wi [lami dezo lopami]
Natural reading: I choose this death. I choose to die here.
Notes: Paired wi-vow with reinforcing /. Both clauses own the same act: the first as noun-choice (I will my death), the second as action-choice (I will my dying here). wi with nominal patient: first attestation with de-zo (death). lo-pa-mi = at my position = here.
S741 — SNG-002-D
Source: "I will stand. I will fight. I will hold this wall."
Tonesu: la-mi wi [ka-su-pa] ; la-mi wi [ka-ra] ; la-mi wi [ka-ko lo-fe-su]
Written: lami wi [kasupa] ; lami wi [kara] ; lami wi [kako lofesu]
Natural reading: I will stand. I will fight. I will hold this wall.
Notes: Tricolon vow — the speech's climax. Three ;-joined la-mi wi [...] clauses with full anaphoric repetition. ka-su-pa = deliberate stance-maintenance = to stand firm. ka-ra = deliberate force-action = to fight. ka-ko lo-fe-su = to hold the fortification (W055). First uses: su-pa, ka-su-pa, ka-ra.
S742 — SNG-002-E
Source: "Not because I can win. But because it is right."
Tonesu: no [go {be-vo lo-wi-du-mi}] — ke, [go {ne-vo}]
Written: no [go {bevo lowidumi}] — ke, [go {nevo}]
Natural reading: Not because I can win — but because it is right.
Notes: Causal-negation + ke, pivot. no [go {X}] = not-because-of [X]. be-vo lo-wi-du-mi = capability toward my victory (W175 wi-du). ke, (G032) pivots to the moral claim: go {ne-vo} = because [it-is-worthy/right] (ne-vo = relational worth = rightness in relation).
S743 — SNG-002-F
Source: "Will you run?"
Tonesu: to-si — la-o-tu wi [ka-ki-de]
Written: tosi — laootu wi [kakide]
Natural reading: Will you run?
Notes: Fronted polar to-si (P-QM-001: fronted to-si — = polar question). la-o-tu wi [ka-ki-de] = will collective-you flee. First polar to-si in communal oratorial address.
S744 — SNG-002-G
Source: "No!" (the assembled defenders)
Tonesu: no!
Written: no!
Natural reading: No!
Notes: First single-word corpus sentence. First multi-speaker utterance (speaker = collective force). no! = the primitive bare negative with exclamatory force. Closes the speech with the minimal defiant refusal.
