Translation Test: Star Wars — The Jedi Code and the Sith Code

Source: George Lucas / Wookieepedia canonical texts

Status: Draft — first pass

Purpose

The Jedi and Sith Codes are among the most cited short texts in popular fiction. Structurally they are an antithetical pair: the Sith Code explicitly inverts the opening claim of the Jedi Code. Together they test a cluster of Tonesu constructions that rarely appear in theological or scientific translation but are central to this kind of philosophical-practical declaration.

Primary tests:

  • Bi-clausal parallel / — the Jedi Code is five lines, each of the form "there is no X / there is Y." This is the / construction under maximum philosophical load: not just poetic juxtaposition (Bashō BSH-001) but explicit ontological denial + affirmation.
  • Scope-derived ara as canonical rendering of the Forcea- (abstract/universal) + ra (energy/force) = universal-abstract-energy. No new compound needed; the scope system produces the right reading compositionally.
  • ru-fe exclusive scope particle — Sith line 1: "there is ONLY passion."
  • to-fe-ka (W029) as "is a lie" — deliberate epistemic mislabeling, which is stronger than mere falsehood; the Sith's claim is that peace is an actively maintained deception.
  • go {…}, causal chain — the four "through X I gain Y" lines of the Sith Code use go (necessary causal mechanism) rather than ; (mere sequence). This encodes the Sith claim as causal ontology, not a casual correlation.
  • Agency shift at lines 5–6 of the Sith Codela-mi (I as agent) throughout lines 2–4, then lo-mi (I as patient) in lines 5–6: the speaker's chains break due to the causal structure (go {wi-du}), and la-ara (the Force as agent) liberates lo-mi. The Sith's self-empowerment narrative ends with the Force as the true liberating agent.

Secondary tests:

  • New affect compounds: fa-wi-ra (passion), fa-su (serenity) — extending the fa-[X] family
  • Social-relational peace: ne-no-ra (relation-without-force) vs bare affect-calm
  • Victory as will-result: wi-du
  • Death as organism-decrease: de-zo (first explicit registration; referenced in W128 notes)

Corpus sentences: S588–S598

Vocabulary Framework

Form Reading Construction Notes
ara the Force / universal energy a- (abstract/universal scope prefix) + ra (energy/force) Scope derivation, not a new compound; a-ra = energy in its most abstract, unbounded, universal form. Canonical rendering of the Force
ne-no-ra peace W171 · ne (relation) + no (negation) + ra (force) = relation-without-force Peace as a relational property: a bond that lacks coercive force. Not the absence of all affect, but the presence of connection that carries no violence
fa-wi-ra passion W172 · fa (affective substrate) + wi (will/intention) + ra (force) = affect-will-force Affect that has become purposeful and forceful. Distinct from fa-ra (W154, fear/awe) and fa-ra-be (W123, anger)
fa-su serenity W173 · fa (affective substrate) + su (structure/order) = affect-structure Affect in its properly ordered form — the felt quality of inward calm. Distinct from su-fa (W133, purity of heart, viewed from the structural side)
su-ne harmony W174 · su (structure/order) + ne (relation/connection) = structure-of-connection All relational bonds in proper structural order. Distinct from ne-su (W031, network — the connective system itself)
de-zo death, dying W178 · de (decrease/end) + zo (living thing) = organism-decrease Natural/non-deliberate cessation of life. Distinct from ka-de-zo (W128, deliberate killing/murder)
wi-du victory, achievement W175 · wi (will/intention) + du (result/effect) = will-result The outcome that was the direct object of directed intention; success; prevailing
ko-ne-mu chain, shackle W176 · ko (containment) + ne (connection) + mu (artifact) = containment-connection-artifact Physical bond that creates an enclosed relation of constraint
wi-ra directed power, authority W177 · wi (will/intention) + ra (force/energy) = will-force Force organized and directed by intent. Distinct from bare ra (undirected strength) and fa-wi-ra (W172, passion — where the initiating layer is affect)

ara — scope derivation, not a compound

ara is not registered as a W-entry because it follows productively from the a- scope-modifier prefix applied to the primitive ra. The a- prefix means "abstract / universal / most general reading." a-ra = energy in its most expansive sense: not tied to any particular force, field, or instance.

This matches the canonical Star Wars description of the Force: "an energy field created by all living things" that "surrounds us, penetrates us, binds the galaxy together." The Force is not a specific energy but the universal substrate of energetic being — exactly a-ra.

First explicit use in corpus: S592 and S598. These are also the first sentences to attest la-ara (the Force as grammatical agent).

ne-no-ra vs fa-su — two distinct readings of peace/serenity

The Jedi Code uses different words for "peace" (line 1) and "serenity" (line 3):

  • ne-no-ra (peace, S588): a relational property — a bond that lacks coercive force. Peace is not isolation or affect-absence; it is the presence of connection without violence. The Jedi Code's line 1 says: replace raw affect with the quality of non-violent connection.
  • fa-su (serenity, S590): an affective property — the substrate in its ordered form. Serenity is not the absence of affect but its structuring. Line 3 says: replace driven/forceful affect with affect that has found structure.

These are complementary: ne-no-ra = peace as a social/relational fact; fa-su = serenity as an inward/affective fact.

The fa-wi-ra (passion) / fa-su (serenity) contrast

fa-wi-ra = affect-will-force: affect that has been given a direction (will) and a driving character (force). This is passion as compulsion — the affect that becomes a purposeful engine. The Sith Code celebrates it; the Jedi Code rejects it.

fa-su = affect-structure: affect that has been given form without being given force or direction. Serenity is what passion would be if it stopped driving.

The causal chain (S594–S596) — go vs ;

The Sith Code's "through X I gain Y" lines use go {…}, (causal mechanism), not ; (sequential connection). This is a deliberate choice. ; would only say "passion happened, and then strength followed" — mere constant conjunction. go says "passion is the necessary condition that produces strength" — Hume's necessary connection. The Sith are not describing a statistical correlation; they are asserting a causal ontology of self-empowerment.

The Jedi Code

There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.

Note: this is the "classical" or "formal" version, attributed to Odan-Urr. The older "mantra" version ("Emotion, yet peace...") inverts the structure to affirmation-then-acknowledgment. This batch translates the classical version as it is the stronger philosophical statement.

The Sith Code

Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.

Source: Rule of Two canon (Darth Bane era). The Sith Code directly inverts the Jedi Code's first claim and replaces the Jedi's static affirmations with a causal progression.

Translation Analysis

S588 — Jedi Code, line 1 — "There is no emotion, there is peace."

no-fa ne / ne-no-ra ne

Written: nofa ne / nenora ne

Natural reading: No raw affect is / peaceful-relation is.

Notes: The / bi-clausal parallel pairs two stative assertions. no-fa = absence/negation of the affective substrate = no raw reactive affect. ne-no-ra = relation-without-force = peaceful bond/connection (W171, new). First attestation of ne-no-ra.

The structural revelation: ne-no-ra is not merely the absence of affect. It is the presence of a specific kind of bond — one that carries no force or violence. The Jedi Code doesn't say "be empty of affect"; it says "let the quality of your connections be force-free." Peace is a relational property here, not a personal one.

S589 — Jedi Code, line 2 — "There is no ignorance, there is knowledge."

no-to ne / to ne

Written: noto ne / to ne

Natural reading: No knowledge-absence is / knowledge is.

Notes: The cleanest line of the code. no-to = negation-of-conceptual-pattern = absence of thought/model = ignorance. to = knowledge/thought (primitive). The parallel is tautological in the best sense: no-no-knowledge / knowledge — the Jedi Code asserts a totality-claim about the epistemic domain. Nothing is proposed; knowledge simply prevails. No new vocabulary; to is the primitive.

S590 — Jedi Code, line 3 — "There is no passion, there is serenity."

no-fa-wi-ra ne / fa-su ne

Written: nofawira ne / fasu ne

Natural reading: No driven-forceful-affect is / structured-affect is.

Notes: First attestations of fa-wi-ra (W172, passion) and fa-su (W173, serenity). The negation reveals what passion IS: affect that has been given a will-direction and forced character (fa-wi-ra). Serenity is the alternative state: affect with structure but without drive or force (fa-su).

The fa-[X] family now includes: fa-ki (W093, affect shifting), fa-de (W094, affect fading), fa-no (W095, affect inactive), fa-re (W096, affect cycling), fa-ra (W154, fear/awe), fa-ra-be (W123, anger), fa-wi-de (W127, temptation), fa-wi-zi (W136, lust), fa-wi-ra (W172, passion), fa-su (W173, serenity).

S591 — Jedi Code, line 4 — "There is no chaos, there is harmony."

no-su ne / su-ne ne

Written: nosu ne / sune ne

Natural reading: No structure is / structure-of-connection is.

Notes: no-su = absence of structure = chaos. su-ne = structure-of-relation = harmony (W174, new). The parallel reveals the definition: chaos is no-su (the complete absence of structure), and harmony is su-ne (the specific structural arrangement in which relations are properly ordered). Harmony is not just "structure" — it is the particular structural mode where connections are well-arranged. First attestation of su-ne.

S592 — Jedi Code, line 5 — "There is no death, there is the Force."

no-de-zo ne / ara ne

Written: nodezo ne / ara ne

Natural reading: No organism-decrease is / universal-energy is.

Notes: First explicit registration of de-zo (W178, death as organism-decrease) and first corpus attestation of ara (universal energy = the Force). The line states the Jedi cosmology: when death (de-zo) is negated, what prevails is ara — the abstract-universal energetic field. Death is not replaced by life (zo-ra, W117) but by the encompassing force of which life is one expression.

ara = a- + ra: the scope-prefix a- raises ra (energy/force) to its universal, unbounded reading. This is the correct Tonesu rendering of the Force: not a specific energy but the universal substrate. ara ne = "universal-energy is / prevails." The Jedi Code ends with the one assertion that requires no negation: ara simply is.

S593 — Sith Code, line 1 — "Peace is a lie, there is only passion."

ne-no-ra ne to-fe-ka / ru-fe, fa-wi-ra ne

Written: nenora ne tofeka / rufe, fawira ne

Natural reading: Peaceful-relation is deliberate-mislabeling / only: driven-affect is.

Notes: The / parallel again, but now the first clause is an accusation: ne-no-ra ne to-fe-ka = peace (W171) IS epistemic-mislabeling-deliberate (W029, to-fe-ka). The Sith don't say "peace doesn't exist" (ne-no-ra ne no) — they say it is an intentional fabrication. to-fe-ka requires an agent who performs the mislabeling; the Sith claim peace is not merely absent but actively maintained as a deception.

Second clause: ru-fe, fa-wi-ra ne — the exclusive scope particle ru-fe makes the claim: only passion (fa-wi-ra, W172) prevails. First use of ru-fe in combination with a new fa-[X] compound.

This sentence also performs the direct structural inversion of S588: both sentences contain ne-no-ra ne, but S588 establishes it as true (no-fa ne / ne-no-ra ne) and S593 attributes it as false (ne-no-ra ne to-fe-ka). The two codes are grammatically locked: the same three words (ne-no-ra ne) take opposite truth-status assignments.

S594 — Sith Code, line 2 — "Through passion, I gain strength."

go {fa-wi-ra}, la-mi ra-be

Written: go {fawira}, lami rabe

Natural reading: [Cause: passion] → I grow in force.

Notes: First link in the Sith causal chain. go {fa-wi-ra} = by means of passion (causal mechanism, necessary connection — not mere sequence; ; would be wrong here). la-mi ra-be = I grow in force/energy = I gain strength. ra-be = ra (force/energy) + be (increasing) = force-growing, composable. Strength is ra in its increasing form — raw energetic capacity building.

Note: go {...}, with braces is the structural slot notation for the causal premise. The claim is that passion is the necessary condition for strength's emergence — this is an ontological claim about what produces what, not a description of coincidence.

S595 — Sith Code, line 3 — "Through strength, I gain power."

go {ra}, la-mi wi-ra-be

Written: go {ra}, lami wirabe

Natural reading: [Cause: force] → I grow in directed-power.

Notes: Second link. go {ra} = by means of force/strength. la-mi wi-ra-be = I grow in directed-power = I gain authority/power. wi-ra-be = wi-ra (W177, will-force = directed power) + be (increasing). The escalation is visible in the compounds: ra (raw force) → wi-ra (force made purposeful). Strength is generic energetic capacity; power is strength organized by intent. The wi component is what distinguishes power from mere strength.

S596 — Sith Code, line 4 — "Through power, I gain victory."

go {wi-ra}, la-mi wi-du-be

Written: go {wira}, lami widube

Natural reading: [Cause: directed-power] → I grow in [willed]-achievement.

Notes: Third link. go {wi-ra} = by means of directed power. la-mi wi-du-be = I grow in will-result = I gain victory. wi-du-be = wi-du (W175, victory/achievement = will-result) + be (increasing). Victory is the result of directed power: wi-ra (force made purposeful) → wi-du (the outcome that purpose achieves). The chain has moved from raw energy (S594) to directed energy (S595) to achieved outcome (S596). All three steps have la-mi as explicit agent.

S597 — Sith Code, line 5 — "Through victory, my chains are broken."

go {wi-du}, lo-mi ko-ne-mu de-ki

Written: go {widu}, lomi konemu deki

Natural reading: [Cause: victory] → my chains enter breaking.

Notes: The agency shift. la-mi disappears; lo-mi appears as patient/beneficiary. lo-mi ko-ne-mu = the chains that bind me / my chains. de-ki = decrease-enter = enter the state of breaking/dissolution. First attestations of ko-ne-mu (W176, chain/shackle = containment-connection-artifact).

The agent of "my chains break" is absent: the chains break as a consequence of the causal structure (go {wi-du}), not as a deliberate act by the speaker. This is a significant grammatical point: the Sith does not break their own chains — victory causes the chains to break. The speaker is now lo-mi (the one affected), not la-mi (the one acting).

S598 — Sith Code, line 6 — "The Force shall free me."

la-ara lo-mi ka-pa-ki

Written: laara lomi kapaki

Natural reading: The Force acts-to-liberate me.

Notes: la-ara = the Force (universal-energy, ara) as agent (la-). lo-mi = me as patient. ka-pa-ki = liberation act (deliberate action that produces place-motion = movement out of containment; W167 context: from EXO-001 ka-pa-ki root). First attestation of ara as a grammatical agent.

The final sentence completes the agency inversion: throughout S594–S596, la-mi (the Sith) was the agent of all verbs. In S597–S598, the speaker is lo-mi — the one acted upon. In S598, la-ara is the explicit agent: the Force itself frees the speaker. The Sith Code's narrative of self-empowerment resolves into a sentence where the speaker is passive and the Force is active. Whether this is the intended meaning is a design-space question that Tonesu's grammar makes unavoidable to consider.

Phonological note: la-ara → written laara. The la- prefix ends in a; ara begins with a- (scope prefix). The written form laara is valid: both syllables begin with consonants (l-, r-), satisfying Parse Invariant 1. The double a is a surface coincidence of the prefix stack.

Cross-code findings

Finding 1: ara = the Force. The scope derivation a- + ra (universal + energy/force) lands precisely on the canonical description of the Force. No new primitive needed; no new compound needed. The scope system produces this compositionally. First attestation S592; first as grammatical agent S598.

Finding 2: The bi-clausal parallel / carries the Jedi Code's full philosophical weight. All five Jedi lines are structurally no-X ne / Y ne — existential denial paired with existential affirmation. The parallel construction maps perfectly onto the theological-practical declaration format.

Finding 3: ne-no-ra ne appears in both codes with opposite truth-values. S588 establishes it (no-fa ne / ne-no-ra ne = the Jedi affirmation). S593 denies it (ne-no-ra ne to-fe-ka = the Sith accusation). The grammatical overlap is deliberate: the two codes are locked together by this phrase.

Finding 4: The Sith Code's causal chain (go {X}, la-mi Y-be) requires go, not ;. The Sith assert necessary causal connection — ontological production — not correlation. ; would reduce the claim to coincidence. The batch confirms that go is the correct particle here.

Finding 5: The Sith Code ends with the Force as agent. S597–S598 shift agent from la-mi to lo-mi (then la-ara). The self-empowerment narrative concludes with the speaker as patient. Tonesu's explicit agent-marking makes this visible in a way the English does not.
