Purpose

The Mao batch is a power, class, and dialectics vocabulary stress test — adjacent to ALI-001 (adversarial mechanics) and SLZ-001/002 (mutual knowledge and epistemic fraud) but in a distinct register: the claims are collectivist, historical, and explicitly dialectical. The vocabulary pressure falls on:

  1. wi-ra from ka-mu-ra — Rule 1: power originates in the weapon. The go/be causal frame asserts an origin claim about what generates wi-ra. First explicit go {instrument}, wi-ra be structure.
  2. Appearance/reality via / — Rule 2 (paper tigers): the same entity is simultaneously a signal of power and the absence of power. This is the fourth distinct / function in corpus: (1) constitutive pair (ALI S777), (2) negated choice (JBP S792), (3) co-presence (JBP S800), (4) appearance/reality divergence (MAO S802).
  3. ge-ki-ka-li-su = revolution — Rule 3: fundamental alteration of governance. Compositional 4-root compound; marks the first use of ge-ki (W187, fundamental alteration) applied to ka-li-su (W147, governance).
  4. pu- as compound quantity prefix — Rule 5 (hundred flowers): pu-zo = many organisms / many flowers; pu-to-su = many knowledge-systems / many schools. First systematic use of pu (quantity/plurality primitive) as a compound-initial quantifier on a noun compound.
  5. ke, inside / (second instance) — Rule 7 (war through war): the paradox of means and end. la-mi wi-no ka-ra / ke, go {ka-ra}, du {no-ka-ra} = we don't want war / pivot: from war, no-war. Cross-register confirmation (first: JBP ethics S796; now: political-military).
  6. go-si as pure simile adverbial — Rule 9 (fish in sea): first use of go-si as a manner-adverbial simile clause (ki ko {o-li} go-si zo-ki ki ko {pa-ki'ma}). Distinct from AOW-001's predicate-property use (ne go-si [X]).
  7. Dialectical co-presence — Rule 12 (chaos + excellent): the final sentence puts wi-no-su (chaos) and vo-be (growing value) in / parallel as simultaneously-true conditions. vo-be cross-domain application: from JBP ethical/developmental register (S795) to Maoist political-historical register.

Secondary tests: four-clause ; imperative chain (S808); go {no-[X]}, no [Y] negative-causal frame (S811); ru-fe, in exclusive-historical-agency role (S806, cf. EXC-001 and DOI-001).

se-ka W034 ✅ examination / deliberate inspection investigation (S811)
wi-no-su W189 ✅ chaotic; will unbound by structure the universal chaos (S812)
vo-be compositional growing-value / excellent vo + be; JBP-001 S795 first use; political application here

MAO-001 — Twelve Quotations (S801–S812)

S801 — MAO-001-A

Source: "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." — Problems of War and Strategy (1938); LRB Chapter 5.

Notation: go {ka-mu-ra}, wi-ra be

Written: go {kamura}, wira be

Gloss: from [force-instrument/weapon] → directed-power grows

Natural reading: Directed authority originates in and grows from the weapon.

Notes: ka-mu-ra = ka-mu (W047, tool/action-instrument) + ra (force/energy) = force-instrument = weapon. The ra suffix specifies that this particular ka-mu is a force-instrument, not merely any tool. go {ka-mu-ra} = the causal origin of what follows. wi-ra be = directed-power increases/grows. First explicit go {instrument}, wi-ra be structure in corpus: the gun is not the power but the origin from which power grows. Mao's claim is not merely that guns are useful but that wi-ra has a specific ontological origin in force-instruments.

S802 — MAO-001-B

Source: "All reactionaries are paper tigers." — LRB Chapter 6; originally from Talk with the American Correspondent Anna Louise Strong (1946).

Notation: [ka-no-be-li] ne si [wi-ra] / la-ze ne no-wi-ra

Written: [kanobell] ne si [wira] / laze ne nowira

Gloss: [deliberate-growth-preventers] are signal-of-power / they are no-power

Natural reading: Reactionaries present themselves as powerful; in reality they have no directed power.

Notes: ka-no-be-li = ka (deliberate action) + no (negation) + be (growth) + li (person) = a person who deliberately acts to prevent growth/progress = reactionary. This is Mao's ideological definition encoded compositionally. Left arm: ne si [wi-ra] = the property of being a power-signal = appearance. Right arm: la-ze ne no-wi-ra = they are [the absence of directed power] = reality. The / marks the fourth distinct function in corpus: appearance/reality divergence. The same entity simultaneously carries the property si [wi-ra] (appears powerful) and no-wi-ra (lacks power). This is distinct from constitutive pair (ALI), negated choice (JBP Rule 4), and co-presence (JBP Rule 12).

S803 — MAO-001-C

Source: "A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture, or doing embroidery... A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence by which one class overthrows another." — Report on an Investigation of the Peasant Movement in Hunan (1927); spirit preserved in LRB.

Notation: ge-ki-ka-li-su ne no fa-vo / ne ka-ra

Written: gekikalisu ne no favo / ne kara

Gloss: fundamental-alteration-governance is not pleasant / is combat

Natural reading: Revolution is not a pleasant event — it is an act of martial force.

Notes: ge-ki-ka-li-su = ge-ki (W187, fundamental alteration of properties / transmutation) + ka-li-su (W147, governance/dominion) = fundamental alteration of governance = revolution; first use. Parse: ge-ki modifies [ka-li-su] as a whole. ne no fa-vo = has the property of not-pleasant = is not enjoyable. ne ka-ra = has the property of combat/warfare (W222). The / pairs the two halves of Mao's claim: what revolution is not / what revolution is. This is the constitutive-pair function of / (ALI S777 pattern) but with a negated left arm — first combination of no and / in this position.

S804 — MAO-001-D

Source: "Serve the People." — Title of speech (1944); pervasive throughout LRB.

Notation: ka wi-vo lo-o-li

Written: ka wivo loooli

Gloss: act with beneficent-will toward collective-persons

Natural reading: Act for the benefit of the collective people.

Notes: The shortest imperative in this batch and among the simplest in the corpus. ka = deliberate action (imperative: act). wi-vo (W190) = beneficent will / will toward good. lo-o-li = patient marker + collective-persons = toward the collective. The o- scope prefix on li marks this as the aggregate collective, not any individual. Mao's formula in Tonesu is: act-beneficently toward the aggregate people. The sentence has no explicit agent (la- phrase) — agentless imperative as established in SNG-002 and MRX-001 patterns.

S805 — MAO-001-E

Source: "Let a hundred flowers bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend." — On the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People (1957); associated with LRB.

Notation: be pu-zo ; zi-ka pu-to-su

Written: be puzo ; zika putosu

Gloss: grow many-organisms ; intentional-exchange among many-knowledge-systems

Natural reading: Let many organisms flourish; let many organized schools of thought engage one another.

Notes: pu-zo = pu (quantity/plurality, primitive) + zo (living organism) = many living things/plants/flowers. First use of pu as a compound-initial quantity prefix on a noun compound. be pu-zo = many organisms grow = agentless growth-clause (PAV-001 emergence pattern: lo-P be). zi-ka (W105) = intentional exchange event = contend/engage. pu-to-su = many + to-su (W030, organized knowledge) = many schools of thought. zi-ka pu-to-su = many knowledge-systems engage in intentional exchange with each other = let them contend. The ; marks these as ordered but non-causally-entailed paired mandates.

S806 — MAO-001-F

Source: "The people, and the people alone, are the motive force in the making of world history." — On Coalition Government (1945); LRB Chapter 15 area.

Notation: ru-fe, la-o-li ka-be lo-pa-zo-li-ti-de

Written: rufe, laoli kabe lopazolitide

Gloss: solely: the collective persons make [the world's past / world-history]

Natural reading: The collective people alone are the agents who produce world history.

Notes: ru-fe, = exclusive scope particle (G031, clause-initial) = "solely / and only." la-o-li = collective-persons as the la--marked agent. ka-be = deliberate growth/construction = make/produce. lo-pa-zo-li-ti-de = patient: pa-zo-li (W135, the inhabited world of human persons) + ti-de (W041, past time) = world-past = world history; first use. ru-fe, here asserts exclusive historical agency: it is the collective people and nothing/no one else that is the productive force of world history. Third use of ru-fe, in an explicit historical-agency role (cf. EXC-001, DOI-001).

S807 — MAO-001-G

Source: "War can only be abolished through war, and in order to get rid of the gun it is necessary to take up the gun." — Problems of War and Strategy (1938); LRB Chapter 5.

Notation: la-mi wi-no ka-ra / ke, go {ka-ra}, du {no-ka-ra}

Written: lami wino kara / ke, go {kara}, du {nokara}

Gloss: I am-unwilling [toward] war / pivot: from [war] → result [no-war]

Natural reading: We do not want war; but from war and only from war does the abolition of war come.

Notes: Left arm: la-mi wi-no ka-ra = I am unwilling toward combat/war (W230, W222). ke, = silent pivot: the refusal-of-war claim is contextually present (and was stated in the left arm); ke, advances without re-performing it. Right arm: go {ka-ra}, du {no-ka-ra} = from [war] the result is [no-war]. no-ka-ra = negation of combat = abolition/absence of war. The paradox: the means (war) is the negation of the end (no-war), yet the causal chain go/du asserts the mechanism is real. This is the second use of ke, inside a / construction (first: JBP S796); confirmed cross-register (ethical → political-military).

S808 — MAO-001-H

Source: "Be resolute, fear no sacrifice, surmount every difficulty, to win victory." — LRB Chapter 30.

Notation: wi-ra ; no fa-ra lo-de-zo ; ka lo-a-de ; wi-du

Written: wira ; no fara lodeze ; ka loade ; widu

Gloss: directed-will ; no fear of death ; act toward all-difficulty ; victory

Natural reading: Direct your will; do not fear death; act against every obstacle; achieve victory.

Notes: Four ;-chained imperative elements — matches ALI-001 S788 as the longest tactical sequence in corpus. Each element is agentless: - wi-ra = directed will = be resolute - no fa-ra lo-de-zo = no fear (fa-ra, W154) of death (de-zo, W178) = fear no sacrifice - ka lo-a-de = act toward universal-difficulty: a- (universal scope prefix) + de (decay/decrease) = all obstacles/difficulties; lo-a-de = patient of all-difficulty = "every obstacle"; first use of a-de compound - wi-du = victory (W175) = to win

The ; is correct: the four elements are ordered (left-to-right), but the mechanism connecting resolve → fearlessness → action → victory is not formally asserted. Mao presents them as the four conditions of winning, not a causal chain.

S809 — MAO-001-I

Source: "The guerrilla must move amongst the people as a fish swims in the sea." — attributed to Mao; from guerrilla warfare writings.

Notation: se-de-li ne-fe ki ko {o-li} go-si zo-ki ki ko {pa-ki'ma}

Written: sedeli nefe ki ko {oli} gosi zoki ki ko {pakima}

Gloss: stealth-agent requires moving-within [collective] like [motion-organism moves-within liquid-place]

Natural reading: The guerrilla must move embedded within the people as a fish moves through the sea.

Notes: se-de-li (W208) = rogue/stealth agent = guerrilla (the covert-embedding function; in context of ne-fe ki ko {o-li} the martial meaning is unambiguous). ne-fe (W042) = structural requirement. ki ko {o-li} = motion within [collective] = move among the people (containment ko + collective o-li). go-si = in-the-manner-of = like; first use as a pure simile/manner adverbial. Previously go-si appeared in AOW-001 as predicate-property (ne go-si [X] = has the property of originating from); here it introduces a manner clause: go-si zo-ki ki ko {pa-ki'ma} = in the manner that a motion-organism moves within a liquid-place. zo-ki = motion-organism = fish-proxy (living thing defined by motion through liquid in context). pa-ki'ma = pa (place) + ki'ma (W114, liquid) = liquid-place = sea/body of water; first use.

S810 — MAO-001-J

Source: "Practice is the sole criterion for judging truth." — On Practice (1937); LRB spirit.

Notation: ru-fe, ka to-fe lo-to-ne-su

Written: rufe, ka tofe lotoonesu

Gloss: solely: action is the epistemic-criterion of truth

Natural reading: Deliberate practice alone is the test that determines what is true.

Notes: ru-fe, = exclusively (clause-initial). ka = deliberate action / practice (as noun in predicate position: practice / the act). to-fe (W028) = epistemic boundary / the line between knowledge states = criterion / the determining threshold. lo-to-ne-su = of truth (W000). ru-fe, ka to-fe lo-to-ne-su = solely, action is the epistemic boundary of truth. Mao's empiricist claim: no abstract reasoning or received doctrine (to-su) can substitute for the test of practice. Compare JBP S797 (epistemic humility as deliberate act) — both are about the limits of unapplied knowledge, but the mechanisms are different: JBP attributes knowledge to others; Mao tests knowledge through action.

S811 — MAO-001-K

Source: "No investigation, no right to speak." — Oppose Book Worship (1930); LRB Chapter 1 area.

Notation: go {no-se-ka}, no wi-fe lo-si-ki

Written: go {noseka}, no wife losiki

Gloss: from [no-investigation] → no right to signal

Natural reading: Without investigation, you have no right to speak.

Notes: no-se-ka = negation + se-ka (W034, examination/deliberate inspection) = no investigation. The go {} causal frame makes this a structural claim: the absence of investigation is the cause of the absence of speaking-rights — not merely correlated. wi-fe (W100) = rule/right/permission. lo-si-ki = patient of signal-transmission = the right to signal/speak. no wi-fe lo-si-ki = no right to speak. First go {no-[X]}, no [Y] negative-causal frame: the negated condition in the premise yields a negated permission in the result. Mao's epistemological authority-claim: the right to make political claims is grounded in and caused by prior investigation. No investigation → no grounds → no right.

S812 — MAO-001-L

Source: "There is great disorder under heaven — the situation is excellent." — attributed to Mao Zedong, Cultural Revolution era (c. 1966–1967); associated with Maoist dialectical analysis; note: not in the canonical LRB text.

Notation: a-ne-su ne wi-no-su / su-ti ne vo-be

Written: anesu ne winosu / suti ne vobe

Gloss: the universal-network is chaotic / the current-state is growing-value

Natural reading: The whole situation is in chaos; the situation is excellent.

Notes: a-ne-su = a- (universal/abstract scope prefix) + ne-su (W031, network/society) = the universal network = everything / the whole situation under heaven. wi-no-su (W189) = chaotic / will unbound by structure. su-ti (W101) = current state / instantaneous configuration. vo-be = growing-value = excellent / opportunity-rich (first used JBP-001 S795 in ethical register; now political register). The / marks co-presence: both predicates are simultaneously true of the same situation. This is not a choice (JBP Rule 4), not a constitutive pair (ALI Rule 1), not appearance/reality (MAO S802). It is the Maoist dialectical move: chaos and opportunity are not contradictory but co-present. The claim that su-ti ne vo-be requires a-ne-su ne wi-no-su to be true at the same time — the worse the external chaos, the better the revolutionary conditions. The / holds them together without asserting why.

S812 Chaos + excellent a-ne-su ne wi-no-su / su-ti ne vo-be / as dialectical co-presence; vo-be cross-domain

New W-entries: none (all vocabulary compositional from registered forms).

Compositional first uses: - ka-mu-ra = weapon / force-instrument (S801): ka-mu W047 + ra - ka-no-be-li = reactionary / deliberate-growth-preventer (S802): ka + no + be + li - ge-ki-ka-li-su = revolution / fundamental-alteration-governance (S803): W187 + W147 - pu-zo = many organisms / many plants (S805): pu + zo - pu-to-su = many knowledge-systems / many schools of thought (S805): pu + W030 - pa-zo-li-ti-de = world-history / the world's past (S806): W135 + W041 - a-de = universal difficulty / all obstacles (S808): a- + de - pa-ki'ma = sea / liquid-place / body of water (S809): pa + W114 - zo-ki = motion-organism / fish-proxy (S809): zo + ki

Key structural findings:

  1. Fourth distinct / function: appearance/reality divergence (S802). Previous / functions: (1) constitutive pair — ALI S777; (2) negated choice — JBP S792; (3) co-presence — JBP S800; (4) now: appearance/reality — the same entity simultaneously is si [wi-ra] (appears powerful) and no-wi-ra (is not). The left arm is the phenomenal description; the right arm is the noumenal reality.

  2. ge-ki-ka-li-su = revolution (S803). ge-ki (W187, fundamental alteration) + ka-li-su (W147, governance) = fundamental alteration of governance. The compound encodes Mao's structural definition: revolution is not reform or gradual change but qualitative transmutation of the governance structure. Candidate for W-registration if further attestations accumulate.

  3. pu- as compound quantity prefix (S805). First systematic use of pu (quantity/plurality primitive) as compound-initial on a noun compound: pu-zo = many organisms, pu-to-su = many knowledge-systems. pu was previously used bare or in quantity discussions; here it functions as a multiplicity modifier that scales up any noun compound to plural/many.

  4. ke, inside / confirmed cross-register (S807). Second instance (first: JBP S796, ethical register). Pattern: [stated position] / ke, [structural claim that advances from the stated position without re-performing it]. The / holds the two clauses as formally paired; ke, pivots within the right arm. The structure is now confirmed in both ethical and political-military registers.

  5. go-si as pure simile adverbial (S809). First use of go-si as a manner-adverbial clause introducing a simile. AOW-001 established ne go-si [X] as a predicate-property construction ("has the property originating from X"). Here: ki ko {o-li} go-si zo-ki ki ko {pa-ki'ma} = "moves within the collective in the manner that a motion-organism moves within liquid-place." go-si now has two confirmed functions: (a) predicate-property and (b) manner/simile adverbial.

  6. go {no-[X]}, no [Y] negative-causal frame (S811). First instance. The negated condition in the premise (no-se-ka = no investigation) causes the negated permission in the result (no wi-fe lo-si-ki = no right to speak). This is a productive pattern: absence of prior condition → absence of derived right. Structure mirrors go {X}, Y but with double negation across premise and result.

  7. vo-be cross-domain political application (S812). First used JBP-001 S795 in the ethical/developmental register (meaningful = what increases in value over time). Here in the political-historical register: su-ti ne vo-be = the current state has growing value = the situation is excellent. Same compound, new domain. The Maoist claim: the condition for su-ti ne vo-be is a-ne-su ne wi-no-su — chaos is the ground of opportunity.

  8. / as dialectical co-presence vs. antithetical contrast (S812). S803 used / as negated-left/positive-right (not X / is Y — antithetical). S812 uses / as co-presence (X and Y are both true simultaneously — dialectical). Both have the surface form A / B but with different logical relationships between the arms. The distinction is now documented.
